Just the word evokes glee in me. Seriously. It’s weird, but I’m, like, yogurts’ biggest fan. I adore it. I eat TONS of it! So when I was creeping all day browsing through The Elliot Homestead blog, run by Shaye Elliot, I just about jumped for joy at finding her crockpot recipe for DIY, beautiful, frugal, delicious YOGURT!…

Okay, I’ll stop. Sorry.
But seriously, you should head over to her blog and check it out! It’s totally easy, it practically makes itself. AND it contains only two ingredients: milk, and a 1/2 cup of starter yogurt (I followed Shaye’s advice and used regular plain ol’ yogurt) and viola! Yogurt! Eeeek!
So far, I’ve made three batches, and they’ve all turned out SO good! The first one I overslept a little (whoops!) and left it out for 14 hours instead of the recommended 8-12, and it still taste great! Although I do think that the 2nd and 3rd batches tasted, well, better. But honestly, I was being super paranoid about the extra 2 hours it sat so it seriously could have been all in my head.
If a crock pot isn’t your thing, you can simply use the stove for the heat factor. This does still require setting the yogurt/milk mixture somewhere that it will stay consistently warm, which is why I really liked Shaye’s crockpot method. Though hours-wise, it does seem tedious, trust me when I say actual prep time is super quick. Once everything is heated and set together, the rest is just a waiting game!
And the best part? Making your own yogurt tends to be super cost effect, and generally, much healthier. Depending on the starter you used, there’s no nasty add-on ingredients to worry about! You can flavor any way you choose, though I prefer some fresh fruit, oats, or raw honey.
